Walk into any fragrance aisle and you will find two families of scent: modern spray perfumes and traditional alcohol-free attars. Both can be wonderful, but they behave very differently on your skin.
What is the difference?
Spray perfumes are blended with alcohol, which lifts the scent into the air and gives a noticeable trail. Attars are concentrated oils, applied in tiny amounts to pulse points. They sit closer to the skin and often last for many hours, developing slowly as the day goes on.
Which one should you choose?
- For the office: a light spray or a single dab of a soft musk attar is enough.
- For weddings and evenings: a rich oud or rose fragrance makes a stronger statement.
- For sensitive skin: attars are alcohol-free, which many people find gentler.
Testing tips
Always test on your wrist rather than on paper, and give it 20 minutes. The opening notes fade quickly, and the heart of the fragrance is what you will actually live with. Do not test more than three scents in one go, as your nose gets tired.
