Power Bank Buying Guide: Capacity, Speed and Safety

A power bank is one of those accessories you only appreciate when your phone is at 3 percent and there is no socket in sight. Choosing a good one is easier than it looks.

Understand the capacity

Capacity is measured in mAh. As a rough guide, a 10,000 mAh power bank charges most phones about two times. Because of conversion losses, real-world output is a little lower than the number on the label.

Choose capacity for your daily use, not the biggest number on the box.

Check the output

A fast-charging phone needs a power bank that supports fast output. Look at the ports: a USB-C port with power delivery is the most flexible option today.

Safety features to look for

  • Overcharge and short-circuit protection
  • Temperature control
  • A trusted brand with clear specifications

Also consider weight. A 20,000 mAh power bank is great for travel but heavy for a daily bag. For most people, 10,000 mAh is the sweet spot between capacity and portability.
